RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
